I bought this and Avery's Maharaja IIPA at the same time. Having been pummeled just recently by the Avery, I was a little leery of the Maximus; however, Maximus clocks in at 7.2% abv, so I figured it had to be tamer, and it was. Very handsome burnished amber color, and a nice hoppy/malty aroma. Very smooth beer with a pronounced hop flavor but not to just beat hell out of your taste buds. I even felt like having another beer afterwards, so this one didn't overwhelm (plus my wife actually DRANK her half of the bomber, so I didn't have to take on the entire project myself). I'd drink it again.

Surprisingly well balanced for a West Coast Double IPA. Hops are present in good supply but not overwhelming, floral upfront with a good bite in the finish. This clocks in at 72 IBU but the amount of malt keeps that in check. Lagunitas pulled this off very well. The only problem I have with Lagunitas is how ironic and too-cool-for-school they come off in all their packaging. We get it; you're snarky. Just tell me what kind of beer you're selling me behind all those clever names.
