Shiner 99

Spoetzl Brewing Co

USA

Helles beers are meant to be light beers as opposed to the dunkel or dark German beers (do I have that translation right, Steve?). Anyway, Shiner's next anniversary beer, the 99, is a Helles style lager. By and large, I'm not a huge fan of the lighter beers, and haven't had a whole ton of Helles lagers. Having said that, I'd say Shiner's offering squares up pretty good. Golden yellow in the glass, malty nose, smooth and slightly spicy going down. I could most definitely see a lot of these being quaffed in the backyard this spring. Wonder how beer-boiled brats would be with Shiner 99...? To the kitchen!
