The Hops sampler guide describes this as a mahogany-colored porter. Remember in "The Quiet Man," where John Wayne asked for "one of those black beers," and the publican replied, "ahh yes, The Porter"? Well, if this was the beer served to The Duke, you can bet your ass that he would've whipped you with a piece of farm equipment. While not required, porters should have somewhat of a robust maltiness to it, often with a roasted, charcoal-like flavor. This didn't have that. While drinkable, this wasn't a very good porter.
